New Medical Center Director Named for VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System

LOS ANGELES - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is pleased to announce the appointman of Steven E. Braverman, M.D. as the new director of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. Dr. Braverman will oversee the delivery of health care to more than 82,000 Veterans and a budget of $1.1 billion.

"We are very happy to bring Dr. Braverman on board as the new director at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System," said Michael W. Fisher, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 22 Director. "His sound leadership qualities and proven experience will be valuable assets for the facility, employees, volunteers and, most importantly, for the Veterans we serve. We anticipate Dr. Braverman will arrive within the next 60 days to begin his appointment."

Steven Braverman joined the VA in 2016 after nearly 30 years serving our nation as an Army physician. He has a track record of progressive professional development and career growth spanning patient care, strategic planning, crisis management, data analytics and resource management. Dr. Braverman has been serving has been serving as Medical Center Director at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Medical Center in Hines, Illinois, since September 2016. In that position, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of a complexity level 1a Veterans Affairs Hospital providing patient care and services to 58,000 Veterans with an operating budget of $735M and 4,600 employees.

Prior to his appointment in Hines, Dr. Braverman was the Director of the Program Analysis and Evaluation Directorate within the Office of the Surgeon General. Throughout his career, he has embraced leadership opportunities, having previously served as the Commander (CEO) of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Deputy Corps Chief (COO) of the US Army Medical Corps and the Corps Specific Branch Proponent Officer for the US Army Medical Corps.

Dr. Braverman graduated with a medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, TN, and is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is a Diplomate of the Association of Academic Physiatrists, a Full Practice Member of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture, a member of the Board of Directors and Founding Member of the American Board of Medical Acupuncture, and an Executive Committee Board Member of the Federal Executive Board (Chicago).

The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System is comprised of the VA Medical Center in Los Angeles, Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center, Los Angeles Ambulatory Care Center, and eight community clinics located in Antelope Valley, Bakersfield, East Los Angeles, San Gabriel Valley, Oxnard, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Santa Maria. The organization provides a full range of health care through medical, surgical, mental health (inpatient and outpatient), home and community health programs, geriatric (nursing home), physical medicine and therapy services, neurolog, oncology, dentistry and hospice.
