VA Desert Pacific provides staffing to support vulnerable patients in Los Angeles area nursing homes

LONG BEACH, Calif. — In furtherance of VA's "fourth mission" to provide care to non-Veterans during the COVID-19 national emergency, the VA Desert Pacific Healthcare System (VISN 22) is providing health care personnel to support vulnerable patients in long-term care (nursing home) facilities in Los Angeles County, California. VISN 22 is comprised of VA health care systems in Southern California, Arizona and New Mexico.

VISN 22's assistance to nursing home patients in the community, who are especially vulnerable to COVID-19 due to their age and/or pre-existing medical conditions, was requested by the California Department of Health due to the surge in COVID-19 cases in such facilities.

"Although caring for Veterans is our first mission, we are proud to support our 'fourth mission' by helping the local community respond to the COVID-19 pandemic," said Michael Fisher, VA Desert Pacific's network director.

Teams of VISN 22 health care personnel are being deployed to provide nursing consultation support to and augment existing staffing in nursing homes in Los Angeles County, as designated by the Los Angeles County Health Department, for a period not to exceed 60 days. Each team includes one Registered Nurse (RN) and five Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)/Nursing Assistants (NAs) or combinations of LPNs and NAs.
